- Abstract
"The Russian Kurosawa: Transnational Cinema, or the Art of Speaking Differently" by Olga Solovieva is a unique and genre-defying monograph that explores the connections between renowned Japanese director Akira Kurosawa and Russian literature, Japanese history, and Slavic film history and theory. The book delves into the political turmoil surrounding the production of Kurosawa's films and suggests that his work is filled with homages to Slavic canon and nineteenth-century philosophy. Solovieva also examines Kurosawa's use of film to promote Japan's suppressed memory of progressive politics influenced by Russian literature. The book highlights the subversiveness of Kurosawa's films and their ability to question the state apparatus.
