- Title
Postpartum Depression and Intensive Mothering: How Western Cultural Expectations of Motherhood Shape Maternal Mental Health in New Parents.
- Authors
Scobie, Olivia
- Abstract
This article explores the links between western cultural expectations of motherhood and postpartum depression (PPD). It argues that current research on PPD is dominated by biological and risk discourse and overlooks the impact of intensive mothering ideology on maternal mental health. It proposes that challenging intensive mothering standards is an important part of fostering postpartum resiliency and should be adopted as a practice tool by social workers who support expectant and new parents.
