- Abstract
The article focuses on the structure of castings. They presents great interest, because it determines the behavior of metals and alloys in subsequent manufacturing processes. Studies of thermal diffusion in stratifying alloys gave data on their formation and on some new phenomena determining the formation of structures in the diffusion layer. For study, a piece of silicon was placed into a crucible with molten aluminum. Upon heating to the test temperature and the requisite hold the alloy was cooled in air. Results showed a well-manifested diffusion layer, dendrites of aluminum and of silicon solid solution in aluminum, a disperse eutectic, and a layer of light-color crystals which were a product of the decomposition of a phase with unknown composition.
