- Abstract
The article discusses nineteenth century American Utopian leader John Humphrey Noyes and his Perfectionist movement, focusing particularly on the influence of ancient Greek philosopher Plato and his book "Republic." It compares Noyes' Oneida Community with the Utopian community created by Plato in matters including personal property, women's rights, sexual relations, and gendered division of labor. Other subjects considered include Noyes' notions of complex marriage, eugenics and Noyes' theories of stirpiculture, and the Oneida Community's policies towards children.
