- Abstract
This qualitative study investigates the trends, conditions, problems, and obstacles found in Laos' popular culture from 2000 to 2020 and considers its future direction. Since the year 2000, Laotian popular culture has been adapted to respond to social changes, being influenced by trends in neighboring countries and social media. This article analyzes musical preferences of people in the Lao People's Democratic Republic to ascertain a three-step evolution of Laotian popular music. The development of Laotian popular music occurred later than in other parts of the world due to political and economic conditions. Laotian popular culture is heavily influenced by both Western preferences and the neighboring Thai music industry. Research indicates that these two influences will likely determine the direction of Laotian popular culture in the near future, although there is promise for the emergence of a more distinct Laotian identity. Research methods used for data collection in the field were basic survey, participant and nonparticipant observation, and structured and unstructured interviews.
