- Abstract
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder. People with ASD have difficulties in social functioning as well as verbal and non-verbal communication. Moreover, they often have narrow and specific interests and implement rather limited range of behaviours. Camouflage is a strategy used by people with ASD to mask or compensate for the characteristic features of disorders, as well as to assimilate socially desirable behaviours by learning specific patterns and then adequately using them in a specific social situation. The presented article is an attempt to describe the phenomenon of camouflage based on contemporary scientific reports. Starting from the dictionary definition, the functions and reasons for the use of camouflage by people with ASD are described, as well as selected factors differentiating the use of the camouflage strategy, such as diagnosis and/or the level of presented characteristics of these disorders, sex, gender identity and age. In addition, attention was paid to the effects of the use of camouflage techniques for people with ASD. The summary shows the main directions of further research based on which it will be possible to gain more knowledge on the phenomenon described in the article, thanks to which there will be a chance to develop more accurate assistance activities targeted at people who especially need them.
