- Abstract
Introduction: Klebsiella pneumoniae belongs to the Enterobacteriaceae and is a common cause of nosocomial infections. It is a gram-negative bacteria that causes various types of healthcare associated infections, including pneumonia, blood stream infections, and urinary tract infections. Aims: The aim of the paper is to analyze the occurrence of carbapenemase producing strains of Klebsiella pneumoniae (KPC) in the Slovak Republic in 2014 - 2019 focusing on occurence, type of infection and risks factors. Material and methods: Our group consisted of 1592 healthcare-associated infections caused by KPC (total number of 1742 positive samples of KPC) identified in the period of years 2014 - 2019 in the Slovak Republic. The Medcalc program was used for statistical processing, by means of which the p-value and Odds ratio (OR) were calculated. Results: The analysis showed that patients hospitalized in the Department of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care (OR =10.32) and the Department of Hematology and Transfusiology (OR = 10.08) had the higher chance of acquiring KPC infection. The chance of acquiring of infection (KPC) was higher in older age (> 65 years of age OR 7.38), also. Carriage was recorded in almost three quarters of patients in our group (71.55 %). Urinary tract infection (12.06 %) was the most common symptomatic infection in our group of patients followed by blood stream infection (3.96 %), surgical site infection (3.83 %) and lower respiratory tract infection (3.45 %). Conclusion: The analysis showed that the number of KPC infections increased during the observed period and also the number of KPC infections.
