- Abstract
Background: The diversity and specificity of the clinical environment causes nursing stress of varying intensity. The COVID-19 pandemic was largely a stressful stress for students, with whom they had no experience in practice. Aims: To identify and analyze sources of stress, stress intensity and preferred coping strategies for undergraduate students in the field of nursing in normal clinical conditions and during the COVID-19 pandemic on a global scale. Methods: A literature review. The sources were searched in the PubMed, Medline and EZProxy databases, published in 2001 - 2021. Results: In normal conditions of clinical practice, the students had moderate and high intensity of stress, the source of which was mainly the fear of caring for the sick and dying, the fear of the patient's death and the fear of their own burnout. At the time of the pandemic, they had worries and fears of possible infection in contact with the patient, ignorance of preventive and curative procedures, physical and mental discomfort associated with the use of special protective equipment in barrier treatment, personal evidence of suffering and direct contact with dying patients and death. The students' preferred coping strategies in normal conditions of clinical practice were positive thinking, optimism and problem solving. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the strategy of social support from others dominated. Conclusion: Assessing stress factors in changing conditions of clinical practice is a key preventive strategy for protecting students' mental health, burnout and leaving health care. The information and recommendations obtained could be beneficial for the effective management of clinical stressors during study.
