- Abstract
The article discusses ancient Roman worship of the Persian deity Mithras, the god of herdsmen. It comments on the expansion of the cult of Mithras during the second century B.C., noting the role of merchants, imperial servants, and particularly the Roman army. Measures of support for Mithraism under Roman emperors Commodus, Aurelian, and Diocletian are also noted. The author highlights conflicts between Christians and Mithras worshipers, noting the violent destruction of Mithraic symbols at shrines in Germany.
