- Title
SCALEBOUND OR SCALING SHAPES: A USEFUL DISTINCTION IN THE VISUAL ARTS AND IN THE NATURAL SCIENCES.
- Authors
Mandelbrot, Benoit B.
- Abstract
The article discusses the distinction between scalebound and scaling objects in aesthetics. The author characterizes scalebound objects as having aspects of scale that are defined and limited in number while scaling objects are described as objects with different elements of varying sizes. He comments on how this distinction applies to fractal geometry and art. He describes the occurrence of scaling in television programs, architecture and paintings as well as natural landforms. He comments on examples of scalebound objects in nature such as crystals and how some portions of scaled objects, such as portraits, may appear featureless.
