- Abstract
This article provides information on the International Learned Journals Seminar held by the Association of Learned and Professional Society Publishers in 2005. The seminar, which is in its 21st year, clearly retains its place in publishers' calendars of events essential for networking and ideas. The speakers' contributions to the seminar fell into three groups. They are the possibilities offered by the evolving technological landscape, present and future behaviours of scholars and a group of case studies of publishers' responses. Sue Sparks of Rightscom brought to the discussion a bewildering array of technologies that will or may have an impact, such as continuing acceleration in processing power, storage capacities and communication speeds, coupled with technologies developed for other applications. David Nicholas represents the CIBER centre at University College London in England. He and his colleagues have at their disposal a vast array of data on user behaviour derived from the digital fingerprints they leave behind every time they consult a digital resource. Some of the characteristics of these user behaviours present key issues for publishers. The significant themes were outlined for publishers who try to respond to the issues raised by the seminar.
