- Abstract
The present study encompasses the traditional fishing method of cast net practiced in Ratnagiri, Maharashtra. Cast net with central line and without pockets locally known as Shigevala Pag were operated manually with or without using fishing craft. The Cast net was fabricated with PA monofilament of diameter varying from 0.1 to 1.9 mm and PA multifilament of 210Dx3x3 for main webbing and selvedge meshes, respectively. Three selvedge meshes were provided at the bottom edge of the net. Selvedge was absent at apex end of the net. Mesh size ranged from 26 to 65 mm for main webbing and selvedge meshes. For first three panels, joining was carried out by 1:2 ratio. From panel no. 4 the ratio maintained was 2:3. The total depth of net varied from 3 to 5 m. PP twisted multifilament rope of 4.4 to 27 m in length having diameter of 5 to 6.1 mm was used as sinker line to which 80 to 294 no. of sinkers weighing each 15 to 22 gm were attached at a distance of 10 to 20 cm. Total 14 numbers of strings made up of PA multifilament of 210Dx12x3 and length varying from 1.30 to 4.5 m were provided for formation of pockets. The fish species harvested by the cast net were mullet, lady fish, silver biddies, glass fish, shrimp and crabs.
