- Abstract
An analytic scale was used to measure the production of an expository text written by eighth graders. Three observers (readers) applied this instrument to 204 compositions, considering rhetorical situation (RS) and mechanics of language (ML). The RS includes the rubrics topic (T), audience (A), and purpose (P); and the ML includes punctuation, spelling, and connectors. Each of these rubrics was divided into different items and descriptors. The findings reveal that the mean score is 27.6 out of a total of 50. In general, the highest achievements are observed in the rubrics topic and purpose, and the lowest achievement in audience and mechanics of language. Precision of the measurement instrument was obtained through the Spearman correlation coefficient, which reveals consistency among the observers and a high level of discrimination.
