- Abstract
The article focuses on the Basic Achievement Skills Individual Screener (BASIS), which attempts to provide counselors and other users with norm-referenced and criterion referenced information concerning examinee performance in Mathematics, Reading, Spelling and Writing. The Mathematics portion of the BASIS focuses exclusively on computation and problem solving. Comprehension was determined to be the essence of reading. BASIS uses a modified technique to assess reading comprehensions. Six words were selected for each grade referenced cluster on the BASIS Spelling test. The optional writing assessment is the only BASIS component that has a time limit. Several shortcomings must be pointed out with reference to the administration and scoring of BASIS. Firstly the manual is wordy. Secondly the scoring procedures are anxiety producing for the examinee. Thirdly there is considerable discretion required on the part of the examiner in scoring the reading and writing tests. Based upon the review of the technical manual for BASIS, the tests and the reporting form there are number of limitations.
