- Abstract
The article presents a first report of bacterial wilt on tomato plants in Turkey. Symptoms of disease started in the summer of 2006 as leaf drooping, followed by wilting of whole plants that within a few days leads to plant collapse. Through biochemical, immunoflourescenes (IF), and real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests, isolates were identified as Ralstonia solanacearum. Pathogenicity of strains was confirmed on 2-week old tomato plants where control plants were inoculated with sterile water and the inoculated ones were grown in a growth chamber. The bacteria were re-isolated and identified as Ralstonia solanacearum biovar 2, after wilting symptoms were observed 5-6 days after inoculation and no symptoms developed on sterile water inoculated controls.
