- Abstract
This article discusses the experiments on the effect of plant losses after singling on the yield of sugar beet. Removing alternate pairs of plants from sugar beet crops during the first week of either June, July or August decreased sugar yields. This factor must be taken into account when making estimates of crop yield losses due to diseases based on yield releases suffered by single infected plants. The artificial infection with downy mildew in the field is difficult after the cotyledon stage.
