- Title
“The Surest Home Is Pointless”: A Pathless Path through Merton’s Poetic Corpus.
- Authors
O’Connell, Patrick F.
- Abstract
The article presents a discussion of the work of the 20th century Roman Catholic monk Thomas Merton, focusing on his poetry. It is noted that Merton's published poems extend over 1000 pages, and even the paperback edition of "The Collected Poems of Thomas Merton" weighs several pounds. The importance of geography, landscape and a sense of place as recurring themes in Merton's verse are noted. Examples are drawn from poems such as "Grace's House," "The Regret," and "The Fall." Although Merton was not primarily known for his poetry, it is said to provide many insights into his views on mysticism and religion.
