- Abstract
The article analyzes the poem "Copy of Verses, Addressed to the Gentlemen of the House of Representatives" by William Smith. The author states that the long poem, published in 1752, represented the earliest exposition of the rising glory of America as a theme. Information is provided on Smith's personal background as well as examples of the theme in later literature. Particular attention is given to the poem's focus on areas such as legislation, education, and European politics.
