- Abstract
The article presents an examination into the life and writings of the Chinese ethnologist Zhang Chengzhi, his historical account of the Zheherenye order of Chinese Sufi Islam, and its ethical interaction with the protests of Tiananmen Square in 1989. Zhang's book "History of the South" and its biographical accounts of several generations of the Zheherenye are overviewed. Theoretical connections between the ethics of Zhang and those of the German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche in his "Beyond Good and Evil" are then discussed. Finally, their manifestation within 1980s Chinese civil protests are analyzed.
