- Abstract
A literary criticism of the book "The Passions & the Interests: Political Arguments for Capitalism Before Its Triumph" by Albert O. Hirschman is presented. It states that the book is about how avarice, which is considered as a deadly sin, was the surest defence against tyranny and warfare during the 17th and 18th centuries. It is stated that Hirschman's arguments for capitalism were not economic, but political; and capitalism was justified because it would lead to a more peaceful world.
