Total Health Information Management: The GTE Experience.
- Abstract
As the largest provider of local telephone service in the country and the second largest provider of cellular service, GTE Corp. will be a major player in the evolution of the nations' information superhighway. Health care information is a current necessity for management and is likely to be a future area of business opportunity. In this article, the information management strategies of GTE is discussed. On the current situation, GTE's system incorporates indemnity and managed care claims, workers' compensation data, patient satisfaction, plan-supplied HEDIS measures and enrollment information. To further elaborate how the company deals with its health care information management, the author stated several challenges that confronted GTE and the developers. Information is indeed a power in the health care business. The system of GTE is not complete, however, the increasing level of sophisticated analyses of the system allows and will continue to support valid, fact-based decision making in challenging times.
