Employee Benefit Packages for Part-Time Workers.
- Authors
Doerpinghaus, Helen I.; Feldman, Daniel C.
- Abstract
To successfully recruit and retain part-time workers, managers need to design more attractive employee benefit packages. This article examines which benefits part-time workers in the U.S. receive and value the most, and which benefits they would like to receive. It is the argument of this article that a much more sophisticated understanding of the nature of part-time work is necessary to design appropriate benefit packages for part-time employees. The article presents the results of a multi-industry survey of part-time workers, exploring five key employee benefits questions. In addition, the author investigates how the changing size and diversity of the part-time worker labor pool has altered part-time workers' preferences and desires for the benefits. It is also being discussed that the differences among part-time workers can be as great as the differences between full timers and part-timers, and present data to illustrate some of the most important differences.
