- Abstract
The article discusses the use of epidemiologic models to examine the effectiveness of treating school-age children for soil-transmitted helminthiasis (STH), a neglected tropical disease. The World Health Organization (WHO) has been leading efforts to control STH, and the primary goal is to reduce STH morbidity associated with high worm burdens. However, the article argues that focusing solely on treating school-age children may not be enough to interrupt transmission and achieve the goal of eliminating STH as a public health problem. The article suggests that a comprehensive approach that includes other at-risk groups and interventions to reduce transmission, such as improving water, sanitation, and hygiene, is needed.
