- Abstract
The focus of this article is on a type of language change observed in the Baure language (Arawakan) of Bolivian Amazonia. Like other southern Arawakan languages, its verbal morphology can be described as polysynthetic, however, with a tendency to replace complex structures by isolating constructions. For example, the Baure verbal suffixes for TMA marking are increasingly being replaced by preverbal particles. Comparing the suffix inventory to the particle inventory, we do not find a complete semantic concordance, but rather partial semantic overlap. In addition to the characterization of the two TMA marking systems, this article also discusses questions concerning the forces involved in the grammaticalization of the new particle system: Which factors are due to universal paths ? What is a result of language- internal development ? and Is it possible to interpret the process as replica grammaticalization under long-term Spanish influence ?
