- Abstract
The article discusses the New Zealand-made film "Broken Barrier" and its relation to the New Zealand motion picture industry in the 1950s, exploring the ways in which the film illustrated the social conditions of New Zealand in the mid-20th century. The article describes the theme of interracial marriage explored by the film and its reception by New Zealanders, the racial tensions between Maori people and Pakeha people reflected in the film, and the depiction of World War II in New Zealand films. Other subjects under discussion include the films "The Conformist," "When the Gangsters came to Christchurch," and "Pinky, Home of the Brave."
