- Authors
McKenzie-Jones, Paul
- Abstract
This article explores the social and political activism of Clyde Warrior, member of the Ponca tribe and a founder of the National Indian Youth Council (NIYC) organization. Particular focus is given to his work on behalf of tribal self-determination, and the influence of decolonization efforts on his rhetoric and beliefs concerning the future of Native American tribes in the U.S. Warrior's identification as a Ponca is stressed in contrast to those adopting generic Native American identities. The importance of cultural tradition, his affiliation with the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, and his rejection of conformity are also discussed.
