- Abstract
"The Roots of Normativity" by Joseph Raz is a collection of essays that explores the concept of normativity and its impact on various aspects of human life, agency, and relationships. The book delves into topics such as human intention, the relationship between intention and motivation, the nature of reasoning, and the possibility of moral change. Raz also examines the value and weight of practical reason, the role of beliefs in providing normative reasons for action, and the connection between normativity and normative powers. The book concludes with essays on the reasons generated by personal attachments, commitments, and obligations, as well as the value of promises. While some may find Raz's arguments unconvincing, his exploration of normative values showcases his expertise as a moral philosopher. Despite being primarily focused on academia, Raz's work deserves wider recognition and attention.
