- Abstract
A biography is presented of opera singer Ernestine Schumann-Heink. She was born in a Jewish Austrian family on June 15, 1861 in Lieben, Austria, attended a school in Prague and was trained by a retired opera singer. Sshe debuted in Beethoven's Ninth Symphony in 1877 and Verdi's 11 Trovatore. She married Ernest Heink and later Paul Schumann. Her career as singer and motion picture actress in the U.S. and humanitarian work to extricate Jews from Nazi-occupied Europe are discussed.
