- Abstract
The topic of support for relatives in need of care and assistance across a spatial distance is still a phenomenon that has hardly been studied in Germany. Against the background of the first and second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in Germany and the accompanying legal protective lockdown measures to restrict personal contact with older persons, "distance caregiving" arrangements were also affected. However, there is hardly any in-depth knowledge about how distance carers, for whom communication and help from a distance was already common practice beforehand, perceived this period of the pandemic. This paper is based on N=10 qualitative interviews between July and November 2020 with distance carers in Germany. The results of the qualitative interviews are based on analyses according to the integrative basic procedure. The findings underline the importance of emotional relationships among the relatives and the general ambivalence towards the pandemic. On the one hand, it is evident that the restrictions for personal contacts placed an emotional burden on the distance carers, e.g., through uncertainty and concern about the health status of those in need of care. On the other hand, the "legitimated time out" enabled them to distance themselves more from caregiving or to explore new ways of communication. In terms of resources and strategies, the distance carers often experienced a particular self-efficacy and agency, as they were able to rely on existing local helpers and established organizational structures during the pandemic.
