- Abstract
Rescue archaeological excavations on the grounds of Prague Castle during the course of the 20th century repeatedly uncovered wooden structural elements of settlement buildings and fortification structures from the Early Middle Ages. In several cases these elements remain preserved in situ. These finds are extraordinary for the country as a whole. We have a series of dendro data available for some of the structures; these help with our understanding of the period in which the structures originated and the manner in which they were created. For the first time an overall evaluation is made of the remnants of two structures from the 10th-11th centuries preserved beneath the 3rd courtyard at Prague Castle that represent two different types of residential buildings - a log house and a structure with a woven paling. Two types of timbering in two of the earliest phases of the wood and earth walls are described in detail: a grid structure and a combined structure. The earlier wall was probably built during the first two decades of the 10th century, the younger wall probably before the middle of the 10th century.
