Einhard, Louis the Pious and Childeric III.
- Authors
Barnwell, P. S.
- Abstract
The opening of Einhard'sLife of Charlemagneis famous for its mocking description of Childeric III, last Merovingian king of the Franks. The passage has always appeared somewhat detached from the body of the work, and its purpose has long been something of a puzzle. Although the date at which theLifewas written remains a matter of debate, it is here suggested that the main features of the opening passage relate to Einhard's purpose in writing, which was rooted in the politics of the time.
