- Title
Industry Change and Port Response: Whitehaven and Its Fateful Dependence on Chemicals.
- Authors
Todd, Daniel
- Abstract
The article discusses the failure of operations on industrial ports at Whitehaven in Cumbria, England. It states that the prime function of ports is to discharge commodities for processing in premises either on the port estate or in its vicinity to load bulk materials for processing elsewhere. It outlines the development of Whitehaven as a port and the chemical firm which came to dominate its services. It adds that the case of Whitehaven clearly illustrates the risks attached to overdependence on a single customer in the industrial ports arena.
