- Abstract
The article explores the potential role of the gut microbiota in psychiatric illnesses. Particular focus is given to gut-brain connections, as well as the intrinsic pathways. Vagus nerve is cited as primary link between the brain and proximal gut. Also discussed are the microbiota-gut-brain axis, development of the hypothalamic-pituary-adrenal (HPA) axis stress response, and effect of gut microbiota manipulation on animal behavior.
