- Abstract
The article discusses bilingualism, slang, dialects and translation, in the context of French and English theatrical productions in Canada. It focuses on Québec in the early 1970s, and western Canada at the turn of the 21st century. It is noted that a large number of French plays were translated into English in the early 1970s, and many of these translations retained some distinctively French-Canadian words and phrases. Particular attention is paid to the work of Québécois playwright Michel Tremblay and works such as "Les Belles-Sœurs" and "Hosanna." The work of western Canadian playwright Marc Prescott is also discussed, focusing on the way he uses monolingual and bilingual characters to structure his plays.
