- Abstract
The article discusses doors and the theme of privacy in the eighteenth century genre paintings of French artist Jean-Baptiste-Siméon Chardin. It particularly focuses on the paintings "Lady Sealing a Letter," from about 1732, and "The Diligent Mother," from 1740. The author reflects on themes of exclusive access and selective disclosure, commenting on architectural form, spatial dynamics, and interior space. The theme of the privacy of correspondence in "Lady Sealing a Letter" is also considered.
