- Title
Threads of Life: Matilda Marian Pullan (1819-1862), Needlework Instruction, and the Periodical Press.
- Authors
Van Remoortel, Marianne
- Abstract
An essay is presented on the life and work of Matilda Maria Pullan, an author and needlework instructor active in Great Britain and the U.S. during the 19th century. It is suggested that Pullan's career, which embraced conventionality in instructing women on domestic pursuits such as embroidery, supported her unconventional choices as a female author and entrepreneur. Details on needlework instructors Eleonore Riego de la Branchardière and Cornelia Mee are also presented.
