"King Romance" in Longman's Magazine: Andrew Lang and Literary Populism.
- Authors
Reid, Julia
- Abstract
An essay is presented on author Andrew Lang's promotion of literary populism and romance fiction in the periodical "Longman's Magazine". Particular focus is given to the relationship between science and popular culture in his writings. According to the author, the magazine used an evolutionary model of human nature in its approach to popular culture. It is suggested that Lang's focus on anthropological research and the unconscious led to a reassessment of the popular.
