- Abstract
To clarify whether exposure to high barometric pressure environment has the effect of reducing stresses, the effects of micro-high barometric pressure (mHBP) exposure and changes in air quality on the human mood and autonomic nervous activity were investigated. The subjects were 16 adults. The mHBP exposure (atmospheric pressure + 10 hPa) was done in the high-pressure room we have developed. Three experimental conditions were conducted: "exposure to mHBP only", "exposure to mHBP + high oxygen", and "exposure to mHBP + high oxygen + low carbon dioxide". In these conditions, anxiety/depression scale and mood scale were measured with questionnaires. Blood pressure and heart rate measurements, and heart rate variability frequency analysis were also conducted. Exposure to the mHBP improved the mood score and suppressed the depression score. Also, heart rate variability frequency analysis revealed that parasympathetic nerve activity was increased during the mHBP exposure. Furthermore, exposure to mHBP with high oxygen and low carbon dioxide had greater improving effects on the stress index, mood scores and the anxiety/depression score than those of the mHBP exposure only. These data reveal that the mHBP exposure with adjusting the air quality has stress relief effect.
