- Abstract
This article seeks to analyze reflections of cultural trauma in contemporary Lithuanian and Spanish drama and to determine how trauma is revealed through the topic of returning to the place left behind. To this end we have chosen two plays: "Antoškos kartoškos" (2006, "Goodbye, My Love", 2009) by Marius Macevičius and "El olvido está lleno de memoria" (2002) by Jerónimo López Mozo. Both texts depict persons who have returned to their homeland from abroad; in both cases their emigration was caused by traumas their nations had experienced earlier: the Soviet occupation of Lithuania and the Francisco Franco dictatorship in Spain. The plays reveal a variety of complexes stemming from the earlier life in an oppressive system, the separation between people, the feeling that your home no longer is yours, and the place of your remembered trauma becoming repulsive. "Antoškos kartoškos" shows how Lithuanians belittle themselves, while in "El olvido está lleno de memoria" the protagonist desires to change the existing situation. The operative key of the article is the concept of cultural trauma applicable when the blows suffered by a certain group of people affect their consciousness, leave a deep mark in their memory, and influence their identity.
