- Abstract
The Lithuanian Research and Studies Center, established in the 1980s, is the only scholarly institution in the U.S. Lithuanian diaspora. Its appearance was due to the presence of an ever increasing trove of Lithuanian heritage items that needed to be preserved and publicized, an ever more assertive scholarly potential among Lithuanian-Americans, some consequences of the Soviet occupation, and an unfavorable evaluation of Lithuanian-Jewish relations during World War II. In 1982 a group of Lithuanian scholars led by Professors Jonas Račkauskas and Thomas Remeikis founded this institution housed in the Lithuanian Youth Center in Chicago for the purpose of safeguarding Lithuanian material of interest to scholars, making it available to researchers, and encouraging them to study it. Prior to 1990 the Lithuanian Research and Studies Center was still in the process of getting organized and building its financial base, although the years from 1998 to 1990 which saw Lithuania being reborn and regaining independence also witnessed increased scholarly activities at the Chicago-based Lithuanian Research and Studies Center. From 1990 onwards it entered a new phase.
