- Abstract
The doctrine of justification has been associated to the sixteenth century. It was one of the chief concerns that led Martin Luther to confront the status quo in his days. For this reason, it is understandable that the main emphasis in theological treatises is laid on its relationship to the Reformation period. The debates between Protestants and Catholics regarding this doctrine were constant at that time. Nevertheless, it is also true that the doctrine of justification was important in the seventeenth century. The Post-Reformation was a crucial period for the definition of Protestant identity. If the sixteenth century was marked by controversies between Catholics and Protestants, the following century was important for the development of Protestant theology. One of the Protestant theologians of that time was Thomas Boston, a Scottish Puritan. Although he is not as familiar as Richard Sibbes, John Owen, Richard Baxter, and John Bunyan, Boston made a great contribution to Post-Reformation theology. Among other things, he presented the doctrine under consideration in a biblical and relevant way. The purpose of this paper is to present the doctrine of justification by faith according to Thomas Boston, showing the importance of such teaching for the Post-Reformation period, and the possibility of being an orthodox in a time marked by heterodox ideas.
