- Title
Obese patients have special needs.
- Abstract
The article reports that the number of severely obese Americans is increasing twice as fast as the proportion of those who are merely obese. This study by RAND Health observed data from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, a U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention survey that tracks self-reported height and weight. The study found that the prevalence of adults who are 100 pounds or more overweight, quadrupled between 1986 and 2000 to one in 50 Americans, while the overall rate of obesity doubled to one in five Americans. This trend is likely to increase treatment rates for diabetes and hypertension, as well as create a need for new equipment to care for patients who don't fit standard equipment. According to a survey from Novation, a group purchasing organization, many hospitals are having to buy specialized equipment, including beds, wheelchairs, gowns, and blood pressure cuffs.
