- Abstract
The article features a discussion on improving the yield and enhancing environmental performance in the lost wax casting industry. The key problem that has plagued lost wax casting is the need for highly specialized labor. In the traditional process, skilled workers must manually perform a welding step in order to build the pattern clusters, and this results in a production bottleneck. A company in New York, MPI Incorporated, decided to tackle this problem. MPI is a supplier of technically advanced wax room automation equipment. The assistance provided by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) helped MPI to investigate and develop a method for automating the welding step of the lost wax casting process.
