- Abstract
The article focuses on estimating the usage of drug in Queensland through wastewater analysis. In Australia there are four drug monitoring systems, all vary in methods but broadly all rely upon self-reported data. This study estimates the daily consumption of methamphetamine, MDMA and cocaine by chemically analyzing sewerage water, measuring the net consumption of illicit drugs. The study demonstrates that wastewater analysis has the potential to supply useful information gathered by current drug monitoring systems. A chart depicting the daily consumption of illicit drugs and graphs representing estimated illicit drug consumption in a week by using wastewater analysis during the period, November 2009-2010 is also presented.
