- Abstract
The objective of this research was to evaluate the effect of the consumption of pigeon pea flour (PPF) in the feeding of guinea pigs for fattening, (GPF) on intake (Fint) weight gain (WG) and feed conversion (FC) in Milagro, Guayas Province, Ecuador. Four experimental diets were formulated, which were elaborated with 0, 5, 10 and 15 % PPF on partial substitution of soybean meal. One hundred GPF, males, of the creole breed, weaned, with similar ages and weights (around 300 grams -g-), housed individually in cages, were used. Food and water during the 8 weeks that the investigation lasted were provided ad libitum. Forage was supplied twice a day to complement the feeding program. The sanitary management program was carried out. The response variables were: mortality (M), Fint, WG and FC. There was no M of the GPF guinea pigs. The results obtained did not show significant statistical differences (P > 0.05) with respect to any of the variables studied. These results suggested that the use of 15 % PPF does not influence the fattening stage, with a favorable response in Fint, WG and FC. PPF can be used in the feeding of guinea pigs, as a substitute for soy flour. The importance of using diets made with local inputs is evident; being an alternative to meet the nutritional requirements that must be present in the daily diet of GPF guinea pigs, as a partial substitute for soy.
