HISTORICAL NOTES: A relook at the observatory at Varanasi.
- Authors
Shylaja, B. S.
- Abstract
The observatory at Varanasi is believed to be established in 1717. It houses six instruments and appears to be a precursor of the much larger instruments in other places, viz. Delhi, Jaipur and Ujjain. Here is a relook at the observatory. An attempt is made to check the instruments as recorded by Robert Barker in AD 1749. One of the instruments, the Chakra Yantra is discussed here; its definition in various texts is extended to understand the instrument bearing the same name here as a possible precursor to the presentday equatorial mounts. There is another unidentified structure whose purpose remains mysterious. Here we discuss the possibility of that being used as a Dhruvabhramaka Yantra.
