The strains of those caring for people with HIV/AIDS are enormous. Thirty caregivers were recruited from a rehabilitation agency where their husbands were admitted. Spouses were interviewed using structured instruments. Majority were within 40 years of age; with primary education, married for last 5 years with good- satisfactory marital life. 24(80%) tested as positive and aware of the implications of their illness; 27 (90 %) fulfilled a criteria for a depressive disorder. It was found that in almost all settings of life stigma and discrimination was seen. However the community reactions were comparatively lesser than in other settings.
