The article explores the historic background and definition of Khap Lue in Thailand. In Tai dialects that are in close contact with one another, the expression kham chap is used. The form kham means words, therefore, the term kham khap, means sung words. It notes that the khap is possibly the oldest form of formal sung performance in the Tai domain, as witnessed by the earliest historical references in both Thai and Western sources.
