- Abstract
There is an approach to understand the uniqueness of the Carmelite church and cloister of San José of Ibague as engines of urban development and implementation of historicism in architecture during the early twentieth century. There was designed an historical study based on political, educational and religious context for understanding the architectural work, for which were analyzed affidavits, along with photographic and cartographic collections present in the local archives. The findings show the programmatic relationship between political, economic, educational, religious and architectural principles, which complements the traditional field of discussion focused on the aesthetic phenomenon, to lead to a vision of social transformation from architecture.
