- Title
Narrating Visual Landscapes: Towards a new approach for the industrial and post-industrial Calder Valley.
- Authors
Hanson, Steve
- Abstract
The article discusses various landmarks and work spaces in and around the Calder Valley, near the borders of Lancashire and Yorkshire in England, and the archive of photography related to them. According to the author, it has been historically assumed that Calder Valley has moved out of the feudal era through a series of politically-motivated industrial retreats beginning with the movement from pre-modernism into modernism. Topics include an examination of the ways in which factors such as identity, community, and place are performative, malleable, and constructed and how visual practitioners and writers might move towards a kind of formalism that begins to address theories of community in a global world as it pertains to Calder Valley.
